Unleashing Your Voice: Mastering IELTS Speaking Part 2 & Part 3

Hey Orators Extraordinaire, So you're on the IELTS journey and have Speaking Part 2 and Part 3 on your radar? Bravo! Let's dive right into these deeper conversations and conquer them together.

Part 2: The Mini-Monologue

Alright, let's start with the mini-mologue, shall we? right after part one, you'll be handed a card with a topic and you'll have one minute to prepare. Then, you'll have to speak for up to two minutes. It's like being the star of your own mini-show!

So like I have said many times this is not a test of your Knowledge so don't worry if you don't know anything about the given topic you just need to make something up but it should be related to the topic. Make sure to have a plan so you must practice quite a few times.

Tips for part 2:

1. Plan Your Attack: Use that one-minute prep time wisely. Quickly jot down your main points and structure. I used WHO, WHY. WHEN, WHERE, WHOSE structure. That way you will always find a point to talk about and be organized as well. It's important to find some signpost to start talking that way you will not get stuck at the beginning.

2. Paint a picture: Be descriptive, and use vivid language to create a mental image for your listener, like in storytelling.

3. Speaking fluently: Keep the conversation flowing. Even if you are not sure about a word, keep talking. again you must improve your fluency so that you will not get stuck or stutter on the exam.

4. Quality over Quantity: Again this rule can be applied here as well. You can talk a lot like a part but it doesn't matter. what you should do is talk with the correct grammar and vocabulary fluently. Remember to try to show your language capability and use some beautiful words and some idioms where appropriate.

Part 3: The In-Depth Discussion

Now, Let's dive into the in-depth discussion. Part 3 builds on the topic from Part 2. It's like having a casual conversation with a colleague but with a touch more depth. So the examiner will ask you a few questions or your opinion on the things you talked about in part 2 or something related to that. You will have to defend your answer sometimes because the examiner may ask some cross-questions in the middle as well.

Tips for Part 3:

1. Expand Your Answers: Again don't just stick to the surface. Dig deeper. Share your thoughts, experiences, and opinions. One thing when you share your experience do it accordingly because sometimes the questions could be asked generally in that case you should talk about more common things rather than your own experiences so keep an eye on that.

2. Consider Both Sides: If it's a discussion on an issue, consider both perspectives. Show your ability to think critically. It means don't just stick to one side talk about both sides that way you will have things to talk about and kill the time.

3. Engage with the Examiner: Treat it like a friendly chat don't get tensed like in an exam or a viva. Engage with the examiner and show your active listening skills. Remember to smile that's really important. It shows that you are comfortable with the language. Do a simple joke if you can trust me it will help.

Sample Questions for part 2 and part 3?

Here are some examples of the types of questions you might encounter:

  • Part 2: Describe a memorable trip you've taken.
  • Part 3: How has travel changed over the years, in your opinion?
  • Part 2: Talk about a book that left a lasting impression on you.
  • Part 3: What role do books play in today's digital age?
Extra Tip: Practice is the key make sure you find the "Kiran Makkar's Speaking Guesswork" book and read it. There is a good chance that you will get a topic from it.

Final Thoughts:

Remember, Part 2 and Part 3 are about showcasing your ability to express yourself, share your opinions, and engage in meaningful conversations. It's your time to shine!

You've got this! Go rock those Part 2 and Part 3!

Cheers!
