A step by step guidance to the UK Nursing registration

First of all, you have to familiarise yourself with the regulatory body the NMC ( Nursing and Midwifery Council) which is responsible for nursing registration in the United Kingdom. They maintain the register of all nurses, midwives, and specialist community public health nurses and nursing associates eligible to practice within the UK. To start the process you will have to open an account on their website.

I'm not going to explain how to open an account on the NMC site because there are tons of YouTube videos you can watch with all the details about that. I will include some links to them in down below too. This post is a brief description of the steps that you need to take to complete the registration and some things you should know that will help you to get some idea. I will write a few other posts about some of the steps separately then I can explain them in detail. Like always if you need to clarify or ask questions you can put a comment below.

Step 1: Opening an Account (NMC part 1)

Before opening an account there are some documents you need to prepare in advance. You should have scanned PDF soft copies of the Degree certificate or the diploma certificate, your valid passport, and the nursing registration certificate. An important note here is that if you have a diploma and a degree then you have to upload the one you got nursing registration for in most cases it is the diploma.

Then you can go to the NMC website and start the application process for registration. You will have to follow the eligibility criteria and answer some questions. After confirming the email and all the details you insert you will come to the following window.

When you click the apply now button you will have to answer some questions and you can upload the documents that I mentioned above. In the end, you will have to pay a payment which is 140 pounds at the time which can be changed in the future.

Step 2: Getting the CBT link and third-party verification

First of all, you have to Prepare the following documents.

1. Police Clearance
2. CNO recommendation letter addressing SLNC
3. Medical Officer fit to work letter

There are tons of videos you can find on YouTube on how to apply for police clearance online. You will get your certificate in one or two weeks. Once you acquire these documents you should send them to the SLNC through their email. When you pay the payment NMC will send an email to our SLNC requesting your registration confirmation. Our SLNC reply to this email once you send these documents to them so when you send them it is better to call them and inform them that you have started UK NMC registration and made the payment and you have sent these documents to them and ask them to reply to the nmc email. Once SLNC replies to that email NMC will send you the link which you can use to book the CBT exam through person VUE site. I will make a separate post on cbt too but for now, let's just stick to the main steps.

In the meantime, you can get the third-party verification complete. to do that you should go to the SLNC website and download the application for the third-party Varification. you will need to prepare the following documents for that,

1. Letter addressing the registrar nursing council requesting the verification
2. Original Nursing Registration Certificate and a true copy
3. Original Certificate of the diploma/ degree and a true copy
4. A true copy of the passport
5. A true copy of NIC
6. Bank Payment Slip

Once you get all the documents and the application you can go to the nursing council and hand over them then they will give you a date to come and collect the verification certificate. After getting the certificate you have to send it to the NMC through EMS or DHL, DHL is a bit expensive but it will deliver fast.

Step 3: Getting pass the CBT exam

once you book the CBT exam you will get about one month time to prepare for the exam which is plenty enough time to prepare for it. check out my post for cbt exam you will get much more information there.

Step 4: Getting pass the IELTS/OET exam

you can do this before starting the registration process too it's completely up to you and your preferences. People are afraid of these exams but it doesn't have to be once you understand the concept it will be easy but if you think you need some work then you should because you should not underestimate these exams it is not easy.

Step 5: NMC Part 2

After only completing the CBT exam and IELTS exam you can follow this part. In this step, you will need the following documents for the registration.
1. Police Clearance
2. IELTS TRF certificate
To complete this step you will need some information from a General Physician as well. Once you fill in all the necessary data in the account then you will have to pay another 158 pounds for the evaluation process. Only the OSCE exam will be left to complete which you have to do when you go to the UK.
These are the steps you need to follow in the UK nursing process. After that, your NMC account should look like this,

I will talk more about each component separately in great detail this is just an overview of the steps you need to follow. Stay tuned for the next posts I hope you got some ideas from this.
